Anna-Lena Hulting is Professor in Endocrinology at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery, Karolinska Institute.

All members of the group are endocrinologists deeply involved in the treatment of patients with autoimmune diseases at the Department of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, Karolinska University Hospital. The research group does both clinical and experimental research. Focus has been on 1) the identification of pituitary autoantigens and detection of pituitary autoantibodies in lymphocytic hypophysitis and APS1, 2) the epidemiology of hyperprolactinemia, 3) possible neuroendocrine immunological explanations to anorexia/bulimia nervosa, 4) the overall neuroendocrine role of galanin and 5) new aspects and effects of oxytocin and vasopressin. The group has a close collaborations with Professor Anders Ekbom at the Epidemiological Unit at the Department of Medicine, KI, Professor Tomas Hökfelt within the Department of Neuroscience, KI and Professor Olle Kämpe at the Uppsala University.

Over the last decade we have initiated and established a Swedish nation wide pituitary registry. We have collected sera and DNA from patients with various autoimmune disorders among them Addison’s disease. We will contribute with patient material to the patient registry and biobank. We have experience doing epidemiological studies on patients with endocrine diseases. There are exceptional possibilities to conduct epidemiological studies in Sweden, due to several long-standing national registries with high quality. The Swedish twin registry is the largest twin registry in the world.

The group will participate in the different WPs in Euradrenal by establishing and maintaining the Swedish patient registry and biobank, collecting clinical data, sera and DNA, and by performing epidemiological studies on natural course, morbidity, heritability and quality of life. We will participate in working out the Addison-specific quality of life questionnaire and take part in the clinical trials.
