Klaus BadenhoopUniversity of Frankfurt am Main, Germany Email: badenhoop@em.uni-frankfurt.de Prof Badenhoop is Head of the Endocrine Division, Internal Medicine I, Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-University´s Hospital. The division include two in-patient wards, access to emergency and critical care units, the responsibility for the central hormone laboratory (including antibody testing) and the endocrine, diabetes and metabolic disease out-patient clinic with more than 7000 visits per year. The research of the laboratory for molecular endocrinology focuses on autoimmune endocrinopathies. We investigate epidemiology and clinical course of type 1 diabetes, autoimmune Addison`s disease and autoimmune thyroid diseases. To detect so far unknown genetic susceptibility factors for autoimmune endocrinopathies is one main topic of our work. Complex autoimmune polyglandular syndromes are matter of our particular interest. We are searching for genetic, clinical, epidemiological and/or chemical markers which enable us to asses the risk for further autoimmune endocrinopathies in individuals with APS. Professor Badenhoops group are generating a register of German patients with Addison`s disease (German Addison Register GeAR) and complex autoimmune polyglandular syndromes comprising clinical, epidemiological and genetic data. Furthermore they investigate patients with premature ovarian failure, vitiligo or multiple autoimmune endocrinopathies for adrenal function and antibody status to detect individuals at increased risk for Addison`s disease. The aim is to detect autoimmune adrenal insufficiency in an early state that bears potential for an interventional approach. Due to the relevance of the vitamin D system in autoimmunity we are planning to screen patients with Addison`s disease and their relatives for polymorphisms in the accordant genes (VDR, CYP27B1, CYP2R1, DBP, CYP24A1) in Euradrenal.
