Simon PearceUniversity of Newcastle, United Kingdom Email: s.h.s.pearce@ncl.ac.uk Simon Pearce is a Professor of Endocrinology at The Institute of Human Genetics (IHG) at Newcastle University. Professor Pearce is working in several different research areas related to adrenal and thyroid disease; molecular genetics of autoimmune endocrine disorders (eg. Graves' disease, Addison's disease & autoimmune polyendocrinopathies) and outcome of subclinical thyroid diseases. Dr. Pearce leads the endocrine genetics group, which has published more than 30 papers in the last 5 years, the majority being upon molecular or clinical investigations into thyroid and adrenal autoimmune disease and its treatment. The IHG also houses the diagnostic molecular laboratory for the Northern Regional NHS Genetics Service, through which is implemented a nationally available diagnostic screen for AIRE gene mutation in childhood Addison’s disease or associated endocrinopathies. Over the last decade professor Pearce’s group has assembled patient material from every case of Addison’s disease presenting in the Northern region of England, and more recently they have worked closely with the Addison’s disease self help group, a UK-wide patient organisation to gather additional materials from AAD subjects. The collection is currently standing at 251 samples, having grown by 50 samples in the last year alone. Simon Pearce and his group will contribute to the patient biobank in Euradrenal, and continue to identify new AAD subjects to contribute to the collection. Professor Pearce has been working on the genetics of Addison’s disease for 9 years, with several publications in this field and his group has recently completed a microarray study, identifying several novel autoimmunity transcripts.
